Tenerife is the largest of Spain's Canary Islands. It gets its name from the indigenous people of La Palma to the west who were only ever able to see the snow capped peak of Mount Teide in the distance thus they called it White Mountain (tiner=mountain; ife=white).
Geographically the island is an area of contrasts. The northwest is a beautiful, rocky stretch of coastline with green fields surrounding timeless villages whilst the east coast is a rather unattractive, barren part of the island. The southwest coast is the centre of Tenerife's massive tourism industry (Los Christianos, Las Americas and Puerto Colon) where fine artificial beaches created from sand imported from the Sahara serve as the main attraction for millions of foreign tourists. The interior is a vast lunar landscape resulting from volcanic activity where Mount Teide (3718m), Spain's highest peak is found.
Our base marina is located in Las Galletas - a small Spanish fishing town a world apart from the tourist areas.
